Traditional tape backup faces several challenges. Tape backup is primarily used to backup data files, not OS; open files may be left out on some backups; Tape backups are very slow and typically take place during off peak hours; restore data after a disaster take even longer to complete. Four hours seem like four days when a whole organization or even just a small department is waiting for the failed server to get back to normal.
Dealing with disaster recovery after a hardware or software failure can be very stressful. Smaller organization don't have the luxury of large budgets that allow for extravagant systems or solutions.

Many small organization "make do" with older solutions that may not meet their needs today. Many organization often wait until a disaster strikes before they consider re-evaluating their existing backup procedures.

With various threats such as email virus, worms, hackers, spyware, theft, and catastrophic events, it is critical that small businesses take action to prevent system failures and data loss; all of which can negatively impact your day- to-day operation.

Organization that have implemented backup and recovery procedures typically use tape or DVD as the their backup solution. These solutions work fine, but they are extremely slow, and can be unreliable when it come to recovery. The time it take to recover a server or even just a desktop is unproductive.

A better solution with faster backup and especially recovery is Disk-to-Disk system such as Symantec V2i Protector.

"V2i Protector 2.0 provides IT managers with a simple software solution for creating disk-based backups."

"V2i Protector 2.0's short backup and restore times make it ideal for IT shops that can't stand long downtimes."

Benefit of Disk-to-disk backup

Super fast Backup and Restore.

Backups can take place any time.

Backup anything without interruption.

Unlike typical slow tape backup system, Symantec V2i Protector is a real-time, disk-based system and storage backup solution that provides a simple, reliable and cost-effective method to back up, and restore a Windows server to an exact previous active state. Backup can be saved to a RAID, NAS, SAN, external hard drive, or DVD without interrupting user productivity and application usage.

V2i Protector creates precise backups of one of more server volumes through the use of "snapshot technology". This process captures all files and volumes (regardless if in-use, hidden, or encrypted), system personalities and configurations and encapsulates them into one easy to manage portable backup file. This eliminates the need to spend hours or days reinstalling OS, restoring data from tape and reconfiguring system back to working conditions.

Because there is no removable media involved, disk-to-disk back up does not need to be monitored. This enable unattended backup of data, and so saving time and money. If you don't think there is any benefit from fast and unattended backup, you will appreciate a fast recovery, even if this happen to a desktop PC.

Tape has always been - and will continued to - a sequential access device. While backups typically take place at night and can be done unattended, restores from tape no longer meet the demand of application that need to be available 24/7. In addition to speed, tape and tape drive are more expensive yet less reliable than hard disk.

The continuing decline in the cost of hard disk has created new opportunities for disk in data-protection and business continuance strategies. Backup directly to disk not only speeds up the backup process, but it also significantly reduces the time required to restore data. Best of all, Disk-to-Disk backup can be integrated with your existing backup solution to enhance and improve the overall process.
