How to sharing a PC with multiple users to cut cost

 nComputing X300 Virtual Desktop
Sharing Unused Computing Power of a PC with Multiple Users to cut cost

Price on new computer systems are so low while performance has increased, so much powerful that most users only use 20% or less of their computing power. Organization with tight budget can really take advantage of the unused computing power to cut cost.

How can your organization lower the total cost of PC ownership?  By simply sharing the unused computing power of each PC with multiple users instead of buying a new computer system for everyone. Why not? If you think today's powerful PC is still not cheap enough, by all mean, share the unused computing power with multiple users.

How do you share a desktop PC with multiple users?

Choose an X-series desktop virtualization kit if all of your users are within 10 meters (33 feet) of the shared PC, and your PC has one or two open PCI slots. If that describes your environment, then you can take advantage of the multimedia performance and extremely low cost of the X-series Virtual Desktop PC Expansion Kit. Following is how the kit look like.

If you want to share a PC with more than 7 users, consider X550. If you want to share a PC with more than 11 users, and need to be more than 10 meters away from the shared computer, choose the L-series instead.

The kit include everything you need. Access Device can be mounted on a monitor

X300 features and benefits:

  • Share one PC with up to 7 users
  • Slash acquisition and support costs up to 70%
  • Easy to setup, maintain and secure
  • Compact and reliable (no fans or disks)
  • Energy efficient (1 watt per user)
  • Multimedia support
  • Screen resolutions up to 1024x768
  • Connect users directly to the shared PC using standard cables up to 10 m (33 ft)
  • vSpace desktop virtualization software supports Windows and Linux

The NComputing X300 desktop virtualization kit enables your organization to dramatically cut computing costs by sharing the untapped power of each PCs. The kit’s PCI card, access devices and NComputing vSpace software work together to efficiently harness excess computing capacity and enable multiple users to share a single PC. Each kit adds three users to a PC, so with two kits a total of seven users can share one PC simultaneously. And each user gets the full performance and capability of a PC, including multi-media.

How does it works?

Simply install
vSpace desktop virtualization, connect keyboard, mouse, and monitor to Access Device which connect to the PCI card on the PC.

The NComputing solution runs on desktop virtualization software, which loads onto standard PCs and allows them to be shared by multiple users. Each person runs their own applications, just like if they had their own PC. And each person has their own keyboard, monitor, and mouse. All of the computing takes place on the shared PC, and the user's keyboard, monitor and mouse communicate with the shared PC through the Access Devices.

Every user has their own keyboard, screen, settings, applications, and data files, so their experience is just like it would be if they were working on their own PC. Even USB devices that connect to the shared PC can be assigned to individual users. Users can simultaneously share almost any application—including web browsers, instant messaging , e-mail, office suites, and even multimedia. People who manage computers for schools, training rooms, libraries, and office applications love the X-series.

Installation is simple. Install the PCI card into an open slot of a shared PC. Next, plug one end of each cable into the card and the other end into an NComputing access device. Even though standard Cat 5 UTP or Cat 6 STP cables are used, they don’t carry Ethernet signals. (That’s why they can’t be longer than 5 or 10 meters, respectively.) The cables do supply the power—as well as the monitor, keyboard, mouse, and audio signals—to the access device. That means no separate power adapters, which you’ll find incredibly convenient. Now connect the keyboards, monitors, and mice to the NComputing access devices. If you need USB peripherals, simply connect them to the computer and software will let you assign each device to an individual user.

Install a second X300 kit and you get 7 users on 1 PC.

If you want to share a PC with more than 7 users, consider X550. If you want to share a PC with more than 11 users, and need to be more than 10 meters away from the shared computer, choose the L-series instead.  Some desktop PC software license are based on per device (one license per PC, can be shared with multiple users); some software license are based on per user (each use required a license even they share one PC).

Please confirm with your respective software vendor to find out if a single license of their software can be shared on a desktop PC with multiple users. Not all software vendors work the same way.

The breakthrough NComputing solution has three parts: desktop virtualization software, a communications protocol, and very durable access devices. We combine these three components into an integrated solution for unmatched performance at an incredibly low cost.

vSpace™ desktop virtualization software

Personal computers can support more than one user. Everyone gets their own software, settings, screen colors, and so on. But only one person can use the PC at a time. Until now. NComputing desktop virtualization software allows all of the accounts to be used at the same time.

NComputing vSpace divides the computer's resources into independent virtual workspaces that give each user their own rich PC experience. Functioning as a data manager, it transmits and handles the desktop display and remote activities from the user’s keyboard and mouse (through the access device). The software has been developed and refined over the past 12 years, and we now successfully support over one million active users—and more each day.

NComputing vSpace runs on a variety of Windows operating systems, as well as several varieties of Linux. Virtualization software like this is very powerful, and it can be expensive and out of reach for many customers. Not anymore. vSpace is included in the price of our access devices.

Extension protocol

To get a great remote user experience, you need a great communications protocol. It's the way the screen image (as well as keyboard and mouse data) gets from the shared PC to the access device, and vice versa. NComputing developed its optimized and highly efficient User eXtension Protocol (UXP) for users who demand a rich PC experience. UXP can handle it all—including multimedia applications such as streaming video and Flash.
